If you are a recent recipient of an orthodontic treatment such as traditional wire and bracket braces or Invisalign, chances are your orthodontist has advised you when you are expected back for your routine exams and adjustments. If you have not yet undergone treatment but are researching and doing your own due diligence, chances are this question has crossed your mind, “How often are braces adjusted?”

Traditional Wire Bracket Treatment:

While there isn’t a standard time frame for everyone, the national average is between every 6-8 weeks. At Bodine Orthodontics, each treatment is personalized to the patient’s oral needs so there will always be several factors that influence this time frame such as age, oral development, and existing tooth and bite alignment. Patients with more complicated needs may be required to come in more often to have their braces adjusted. Routine checkups at Bodine Orthodontics are important so that Dr. Bodine can analyze the effects of the treatment in order to prepare for your next adjustment. A typical adjustment may only consist of tightening the wires and replacing bands and in some cases, a bracket may need to be replaced. Usually, the tightening process won’t take more than a few minutes. These adjustments are vital to the progression of your treatment and therefore cannot be skipped.

Invisalign Aligners:

For those of you looking into Invisalign treatment, you will adjust much more often than patients with traditional braces – but in the comfort of your own home by changing to your new aligners. While Invisalign recommends changing your aligner tray every 2 weeks, this may be altered slightly by Dr. Bodine given your specific treatment. Much like with traditional braces, the complexity of your orthodontic treatment will dictate how often you will undergo an adjustment, or switching to a new aligner. It’s just as important to keep up to date with routine exams to monitor your treatment progress, adhering to the plan laid out by Dr. Bodine. Rushing through treatment can compromise your oral health. If you switch aligners before the proper time, you risk moving your teeth too quickly which can result in weak roots for your teeth. Depending on the complexity of your treatment it is possible to wear an aligner for 3 weeks, other times it may be less than 2 weeks. We will assess your treatment and advise on the next steps in your progress to a beautiful smile.
